Research Interests

Volcanology: Analysis of the processes responsible for creating volcanic landforms, and identifying the characteristics by which those processes may be mapped using remote sensing datasets.

Remote sensing: Techniques and instrument development for, and analysis of, visible, near infrared, shortwave infrared, thermal infrared, radar, and topography (e.g., LiDAR, laser rangefinder) data acquired from spaceborne, airborne, field and laboratory (i.e., optical spectrometer) sensors; application of remote sensing datasets for a variety of geologic and environmental applications

Field geology and mapping technologies: Field and computer methods for mapping based on use of Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Infromation Sustems (GIS) technology in conjunction with remote sensing data

Planetary geology: Examination and mapping of landforms identified through analysis of planetary remote sensing datasets, especially for Mars, Venus, Io and the Moon

Other interests: Volcanic structures, remote sensing applications for other areas of process geomorphology, scale-dependence in geology, cryovolcanism on icy planetary satellites in the outer solar system, assessing volcanic hazards, evolution of the solar system, life in the universe, science education, philosophy of science.
