Michelle Lutiker

MLutiker         Michelle Lutiker is a first year doctoral student who was awarded the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship as a senior undergraduate student. She will work with Assistant Professor Natascha Reidinger investigating uranium depletion in organic-rich Devonian-age shale to assist in determining depositional and diagenetic processes at work in ancient North American interior seaways. Through the application of trace metal geochemistry, Michelle hopes to bridge the gap in our current understanding of why some black shales display variations in gamma response due to low concentrations of uranium, despite having high amounts of total organic carbon. This research may allow for a more complete picture of how changing sea levels affected depositional environments and deep marine redox conditions within epeiric seas.
