Facilities, Equipment, and Other Resources - Oklahoma State University

The Boone Pickens School of Geology is well equipped, housing facilities that support the research and teaching programs within the School and providing analytical services to other departments within OSU, other universities, and government and non-government entities. Our laboratory facilities are housed in the Noble Research Center and the Henry Bellmon Research Center.

STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY AND PLATE TECTONICS LABORATORY
The School has state-of-the-art equipment to support structural geology and tectonic analyses, and for conducting GPS surveys, processing, rock deformation analysis, and geologic mapping.  The equipment inventory includes:

   Three computers with
      ESRI ArcGIS;

      MIT’s GAMMIT-GLOBK;

 Eight Trimble NetRS GPS campaign kits with Zephyr antennas, batteries, solar panels, Two computers equipped with GAMMIT-GLOBK and GIPSY-OASIS for processing  GPS data.

     AutoLab 550-D, a manually controlled rock deformation system.
     Stihl diamond-bit coring drill system.
     Nikon Eclipse E600 petrographic microscope with Nikon camera.
     Brunton compasses, hand held GPS units, rock hammers, and sample bags for field campaigns.

GEOPHYSICS, BIOGEOPHYSICS, HYDROGEOPHYSICS, AND SEISMOLOGY LABORATORIES
The School has state of the art equipment for conducting geophysical surveys related to subsurface contamination, microbial processes at contaminated sites, shallow subsurface lithological studies, and for petroleum research.  In addition, a variety of geophysical equipment is available for conducting research in neotectonics.

SEISMIC COMPUTATION LABORATORY
The School has a computational laboratory for processing seismic data for petroleum and crustal research.

GEOSPATIAL SCIENCE AND GEODYNAMICS LABORATORY
The Geospatial Science and Geodynamics Lab at Boone Pickens School of Geology at Oklahoma State University has the following hardware and software:

REMOTE SENSING ANALYSIS LABORATORY
The School houses research facilities to support remote sensing analyses for geologic and other applications.  These facilities provide the ability to collect laboratory- and field-based remote sensing data as well as process satellite, airborne, field, and laboratory data, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) capabilities to enhance geospatial analysis and mapping capabilities.
•    Field-based thermal infrared spectrometer.
•    Trimble GeoXH differential Global Positioning System with Zephyr external antenna and associated accessories.
Computing infrastructure, including large dual displays, a Wacom pen tablet for mapping, and ArcGIS and ENVI software.

OSU CORE FACILITY FOR LASER-BASED THREE-DIMENSIONAL SCANNING
Housed in the Remote Sensing Analysis Laboratory of the Boone Pickens School of Geology is a University Core Facility for acquiring, processing, and analyzing lidar data.  This facility provides 3D scanning capabilities to the entire OSU community.
•    Terrestrial full-waveform LIDAR system.
•    Panasonic Toughbook 31.
•    Associated surveying equipment.

GEOCHEMISTRY LABORATORY
The Boone Pickens School of Geology is well equipped and houses facilities that support the research and teaching programs within the School and provide analytical services to other departments within OSU, other universities, and government and non-government entities.

Room 010E/P, Henry Bellmon Research Center. This laboratory is 960+ ft2 and houses instrumentation for stable isotope, organic, and inorganic geochemical analyses and associated sample preparation and storage. The laboratory has three hoods, ample power supply, overhead access bays, pressured air, vacuum, natural gas, sinks, storage cabinets, shelves, reverse osmosis water and is internet ready.

Room 013 Noble Research Center. This laboratory is 394 ft2 and houses instrumentation total for organic carbon analyses and associated sample preparation and storage. The laboratory has a hood, ample power supply, pressured air, vacuum, natural gas, sinks, shelves, reverse osmosis water and is internet ready.


Major Analytical Equipment
Stable Isotopes (C, N, O, H)
•    Thermo Finnigan Deltaplus XL interfaced with a Costech ECS 4010 combustion EA, high temperature conversion elemental analyzer (TC/EA), and a GasBench.
•    Two multipurpose vacuum extraction lines and the necessary wet chemical facilities to prepare gases for stable isotope analyses.

Elemental and Chromatographic Analyses of Liquids
•    PerkinElmer Optima™ 2000 DV Inductively Coupled Plasma/Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP/OES) with ultrasonic nebulizer, dual view optics, and autosampler.
•    Dionex Reagent-Free™ Ion Chromatography System (ICS-3000). The ICS is equipped with an autosampler and configured in the dual IC mode for simultaneous determination of major anion and cations and simultaneous multi-method analyses.
•    Shimadzu 20A HPLC. This HPLC has a quaternary solvent delivery system and an autosampler capable of pretreatment as well as a manual injector. It is equipped with detection capabilities that include UV-VIS, PDA, and fluorescence.
•    ThermoElectron Aquamate UV-Visible Spectrophotometer equipped with a miniSipper.

Chromatographic Analyses of Gases
•    Perkin Elmer Clarus 500 Gas Chromatograph with autosampler and flame ionization detector and thermal conductivity detector.
•    Perkin Elmer Autosystem XL Gas Chromatograph is equipped with autosampler, S/S inlet, and flame ionization detector.

Elemental Analyses of Solids
•    UIC, Inc. CM 5014 Coulometer with a furnace and a CM5130 acidification module for the analyses of TC, TOC and TIC in solid and liquid of geological and environmental significance
•    LECO SC632 TOC and S Analyzer (housed in NRC 013)

PETROLOGY AND SEDIMENTOLOGY LABORATORY
The School has state of the art equipment for conducting petrologic and sedimentologic research.  In addition to the specific equipment listed below this includes basic sample preparation equipment (rock saws, rock crushers, thin sectioning equipment, and polishing equipment), and a core storage and analysis facility.
Petrologic and Sedimentologic Equipment
•    PROG-200 gas porosity meter
•    PERG-200 gas permeameter
•    PERL-200 liquid permeameter
•    CILAS 1180L laser particle-size analyzer with CCD camera and image analysis software.  The system is capable of determining the grain size of particles between 0.04 and 2500 microns and the grain shape for particles ranging in size between 20 and 2500 microns.
•    Advantech sonic sifter separator for grainsize analysis
•    Muffle furnace
•    Gravity convection ovens
•    High speed centrifuge
•    Mettler Toledo AE200 analytical balance
•    Several research grade petrographic microscopes including epi-fluorescence and a computer automated point-counting stage.
•    CITL CL8200 MK5 Optical Cathodoluminescence system mounted on a petrographic microscope equipped with a low light intensity digital camera system.
•    Linkam computer automated Geology Pro Heating and Freezing stage mounted on a petrographic microscope equipped with UV epi-fluorescence capability for fluid inclusion microanalysis.
•    Phillips PW3020 computer automated X-ray diffractometer with recently (2006) upgraded electronics, water cooler and computer, operational software and peak search software.  The laboratory also includes sample preparation equipment for X-ray studies on all types of geological samples including clay minerals.

COMPUTER AND TEACHING LABORATORIES
•    The School is home to the Devon Visualization Facility, a computing teaching facility with 2D and 3D graphical modeling and projection equipment, and videoconferencing capabilities.  The laboratory includes advanced graphics stations,
•    The School of Geology operates a 20 seat networked, multi-platform facility computer lab.  The laboratory also has a variety of multimedia peripherals in the form of color scanners, , large format color plotters and scanners, The laboratory has a wide range of programs that include Mathworks MatLab, ESRI ArcGIS, statistical, and word processing software.  There are also numerous stand-alone computers in our laboratories and student offices that are equipped with specialized software.
•    The School has 30 portable laptop computers also equipped with a variety of software for use in class and laboratory sessions.
The School has 10 field-resistant laptop computers for use by students.  Students can check out the laptops when instruments require the use of a computer in the field.
•    The School of Geology houses four general teaching labs as well as two specialized labs. These labs are furnished with a wide variety of rock, mineral, and fossil specimens; petrographic microscopes, maps, and other teaching aids.

ADDITIONAL FIELD EQUIPMENT
The School operates a variety of equipment for use in facilitating field research, including:
•    Geoprobe 6300 TMP capable of collecting a 2.5 cm diameter core up to 20 m in length.  The drilling equipment is mounted on a 16’ trailer capable of being towed to the field by a full-sized pickup truck.
•    Two Topcon Hiperlite+ RTK GPS system.
•    Miscellaneous equipment: Brunton compasses, digital cameras, tape measures, etc.
Research Vessel
The School of geology has an R/V Trinity.  The R/V Trinity is a 16’x 8’ barge. The boat also acts as a platform for the collection of shorter 7.6 cm diameter cores using the vibracore rig owned by Oklahoma State University.  The research vessel can be towed on a trailer from one estuary to another easily using a full-size pickup truck, owned by the School of Geology.

ADDITIONAL COLLABORATING FACILITIES ON OSU CAMPUS
•    Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrophotometer:  The OSU Soil, Water, and Forage Analytical Laboratory is equipped with an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectrometer.
•    Microscopy Laboratory:  OSU currently maintains a Transmission Electron Microprobe, Confocal Microscope and Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Equipment housed in this facility include a Leica CM 1900 Cryostat, JEOL 100 CX II STEM, JEOL JXM 6400 SEM, Leica TCS Sp2 Confocal Microscope.  
•    JEOL 733 Superprobe Electron Microprobe (EMP).
