Our next speaker is Dr. Matthew Jones from the Dept. of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan, and he will be talking about: "The effects of large igneous province volcanism on Cretaceous oceans and climate".

Brief summary: The eruption of a large igneous province roughly 95 million years ago released vast quantities of CO2 to the ocean-atmosphere system. New sedimentological observations of cores drilled from the eastern Indian Ocean, along with geochemical measurements of invertebrate macrofossils, provide evidence for an extreme greenhouse paleoclimate and a severe episode of ocean acidification in deep geologic time.
Dr. Matt Jones is a Postdoctoral Fellow with expertise in Paleoceanography; Paleoclimate; Geochemistry; Climate Change; Oceanography.
